Kindred Training Programs
Developing scientist-practitioners rooted in the ethics of love and care
Healing Space and ALMA are training clinics within UCSB’s APA-accredited doctoral program in counseling, clinical and school psychology. Trainees are supported through jegnaship, a mentor-elder relationship drawn from African diasporic traditions, in which guidance, accountability and presence flow in both directions and mentors walk with trainees as they grow into whole clinicians and people. Supervision is grounded in African-centered psychology, liberation psychology and Black feminist thought, and at ALMA, in curanderismo, Latin American liberation psychology and Chicana feminist thought.
Kindred Predoctoral Psychology Practicum
Doctoral students in UCSB’s counseling, clinical and school psychology program can train at Healing Space or ALMA through the Kindred practicum, seeing clients under licensed supervision. The training year includes weekly seminars, weekly group and individual supervision, a monthly gathering of the whole collective and a fall retreat.
Healing Space + ALMA Fellowships
Fellowships are open to students at different stages of their training. Fellows join our weekly seminars and monthly gatherings and lead community outreach or research projects.
Postdoctoral Fellowship
Our postdoctoral fellowship is offered in partnership with the Gender Health Center in Sacramento, and fellows train and see clients at both sites.
