Community
Kindred grows out of Santa Barbara County and the people who were doing this work long before we arrived. Here are organizations we've worked alongside in some way, and others whose work we want more people to know.
Alongside us in Santa Barbara County
- Gateway Educational Services – Black-led education and youth leadership across the county
- Healing Justice Santa Barbara – Black-led healing and organizing. Their 2020 call for Black therapists is where Healing Space began.
- NAACP Santa Maria–Lompoc Branch – civil rights advocacy and community programming in North County
- Juneteenth Santa Barbara – the county's Juneteenth celebration and community events
- SBCC Umoja – a Santa Barbara City College community rooted in African and African American traditions
In schools
This year Kindred is leading formation for educators and school leaders in Santa Barbara Unified, centered on belonging for Black and Multiracial Black students. The barriers Black students face are old, and they run through our schools and the wider society. Moving them takes educators, school staff and district leaders willing to do personal work on identity, reshape school culture and take up anti-racist work in the structures of schooling itself. We do this alongside community leaders who've been doing it here far longer than we have.
